Professor Constantin Coussios appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Innovation

The Oxford Science Park (TOSP) warmly congratulates Professor Constantin Coussios on his appointment as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Innovation at the University of Oxford, a role he will take up at the end of April 2026.

A pioneer in biomedical engineering and a driving force behind some of Oxford’s most successful spinouts, Professor Coussios has long been embedded in the innovation community that thrives at the Park. His appointment marks a significant moment not only for the University, but for the wider Oxford ecosystem in which research, entrepreneurship and industry intersect.

Professor Coussios’s connection with TOSP spans more than a decade and is further strengthened through his Fellowship at Magdalen College, majority owner of The Oxford Science Park. In 2008, he co-founded OrganOx, a University spinout that went on to transform organ preservation through its normothermic perfusion technology. From 2014 to 2024, OrganOx was headquartered at the Park, where it scaled its operations and advanced a platform that is now improving transplant outcomes and saving lives around the world. The company’s landmark acquisition in 2025, valued at over £1 billion, stands as a testament to the strength of Oxford’s innovation pipeline.

His entrepreneurial journey at the Park continues today. Professor Coussios co-founded OxSonics in 2014, which is developing ultrasound-enabled technologies to enhance the delivery of cancer therapeutics to solid tumours. In 2018, he co-founded OrthoSon Ltd, focused on pioneering injectable biomaterials to treat lower-back pain. Both companies remain based at The Oxford Science Park, contributing to its dynamic community of high-growth science and technology ventures.

Alongside his entrepreneurial achievements, Professor Coussios has built a distinguished academic career. Since joining Oxford in 2004 as its first academic in biomedical engineering, he has played a central role in shaping the field within the University. As Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering from 2016 to 2025, he oversaw a period of significant expansion, doubling both academic staff and research areas. His leadership has consistently bridged disciplines and translated cutting-edge research into real-world impact.

His contributions have been widely recognised. He was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2017, elected a Fellow in 2019, and appointed OBE in 2022 for services to biomedical engineering. In 2024, he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and in 2025 he led the team awarded the prestigious MacRobert Prize for technological innovation.

Professor Coussios’s appointment as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Innovation reflects his exceptional track record in bringing together academia, industry and investment to deliver societal and economic benefit. His leadership will play a key role in strengthening Oxford’s innovation capacity, supporting the development of new ideas, talent and ventures across the region and beyond.

The Oxford Science Park is proud to have supported elements of Professor Coussios’s journey and to continue hosting the companies he has helped to build. His success exemplifies the collaborative, entrepreneurial spirit that defines the Park and the wider Oxford ecosystem.

We look forward to seeing the impact of his leadership in this new role, and to continuing our shared mission of advancing world-leading innovation for the benefit of society.
